Why Teach and Coach Collaboration?

Collaboration is an important 21st Century skill that is of critical need for our students as the future participants of industry, entrepreneurial opportunities, education, and government. Collaboration is a valuable commodity that in its appearance seems more art than science, when the opposite is just as true.

Partnership for 21st Century Learning, an organization that addresses a variety of areas, including Education, defines Collaboration as:

  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse teams
  • Exercise flexibility and willingness to be helpful in making necessary compromises to accomplish a common goal
  •  Assume shared responsibility for collaborative work, and value the individual contributions made by each team member

Working together for a common goal can be more challenging than it would appear. A common example is group work. One or two team members  do the work while other teammates are either not included in doing the interesting tasks; or they choose to stand aside, content to let the others do all the work, before showing up to share in the credit.

Hopefully in your educational career, you have heard of  partnerships with some type of group. It can be as local as a store in town and as international as a for-profit business. Regardless of whom it's with, the goal of the partnership should be beneficial to the learners you serve. 

Note: this is not that "shared-partnership" nonsense. If a Board President ever contacts you with that concept, contact the board attorney immediately. 

While I have been fortunate enough to see many partnerships, I'm always a fan of seeing state organizations partnering in schools. Recently, Liberty Science Center has agreed to come to my current district to "push in" a series of science lessons, experiments, and curriculum. Better yet - we might be having Camden County College  pick up the tab. Why is this great? Two reasons; every district loves the word free, and it's great for our students who never get the chance to get there. We are about 45 minutes from Philadelphia; not to knock any Philly museums, but this is the go-to spot for most in our area. Having additional exposure to other programming is really nice.

The second partnership is with Montclair State University and their gifted and talented program. MSU is working hard to inject their courses, programming, and activities into all schools, not just local. Again, students  getting exposure  from other external opportunities? Fantastic!

Flat Stanley is a wonderful way to connect students with people and places around the world. The project has been around for 20 years! Recently, my global teaching partners and I found a new twist for using Flat Stanley in a project! Classes in Australia, Lebanon, South Africa, Finland, and the Untied States wanted to complete a project that involved a Staley FROM each location being present AT each location... at the SAME TIME! If you have used the postal service to send items to schools in faraway places, you know how long that can take, expecially considering how many locations we were using.

Imagination is a powerful tool in young children, and our students had no problem using their vivid imaginations to devise a simpler way to allow our Flat Stanley characters to travel the globe. Here is a step by step explanation of how it worked:

In each classroom, each student created a Flat Stanley holding the flag of his or her country. Those would be the characters meeting the traveling Stanleys as they arrived.

Students voted on one Stanley to represent their class by traveling to the other locations.
