Tech Support for Struggling Writers

Technology gives us as teachers the ability to provide students with additional tools and resources to help all students achieve their learning goals.

Here are some resource ideas:

  1. Have the students write on Word or Google Docs. Spell check is a great confidence booster for students with learning disabilities such as Dyslexia. It helps them catch and correct their mistakes.

  2. Read & Write for Google Chrome- https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readwrite-for-google-chro/inoeonmfapjbbkmdafoankkfajkcphgd?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-search This Chrome extension allows students to hear the words, highlight in various colors, and even a built in dictionary. Text can be translated to other languages in order to aid ELL students. Allows you to create and listen to voice notes. There’s a free premium subscription for teachers at rw.texthelp.com/freeforteachers after installing the Read&Write for Google Chrome trial.

  3. EduPlace- http://www.eduplace.com/graphicorganizer/ offers a lot of graphic organizers to help student writers organize their ideas and writing. Upload the pdf to Google Docs to modify it or install DocHub.

  4. Read Write & Think- http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/student-interactives/ provides a variety of interactive writing and reading tools.
